Using the Library During Phase 1 of Reopening
HPL is moving forward to safely offer library materials and programs as conditions allow. We have added more online books and audiobooks to our collection, and moved Teen Advisory Board and Book Group Meeting online using Zoom. Please visit our website and Facebook page regularly for updates on our services. Here are some answers to questions you may have:
When are you reopening?
Heritage Public Library is currently open for contact-free curbside checkout of materials only. A date for reopening to allow patrons inside our buildings will be set once details of Governor Northrum’s Phase 2 plan to reopen Virginia are clarified. This is an evolving situation and we will adjust our hours and services to safely open to the public.
What are the curbside pickup hours? How does it work?
You may place holds on items online any time. You may call to place holds by phone or come to pick up holds at New Kent from 10am to 2pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and on Tuesday from 3pm to 7pm. Charles City is open for holds placed by phone and for holds pickup every Monday through Friday from 10am to 2pm. Please wait for notification that your items are ready to pick up before coming to the library. Once you arrive, call the posted number and staff will place your items on a table for you to pick up.
How do I return my items?
The book drop at New Kent is open, and at both locations you may place items you wish to return in tubs located near the holds pickup table set up at each location. At this time we are not accepting donations, just returned Library items.
What about late fees?
Late fees have been suspended until June 1. We will evaluate whether to resume late fees at that time.
What safety procedures do you have in place while providing curbside checkout?
The service is contact-free, meaning that we ask you to wait for staff to place your items on the table and return to the building before approaching the table to collect your items. Staff are masked and gloved. Both library locations have been deep cleaned, and we continue to disinfect regularly. Additionally, all items returned are quarantined for 72 hours before returning to circulation.
What safety procedures will you have in place when you open to the public?
We continue to follow practices in line with ALA recommendations, which in turn are informed by CDC recommendations. For example:
- Staff will continue to be masked
- Surfaces and objects that are frequently touched will be routinely cleaned and disinfected
- Sick staff and volunteers will stay home, and we ask our patrons to do the same
- Library areas and furnishings will be modified to provide safe distances between individuals
- We will continue to quarantine materials as long as experts consider this necessary
- Programs will be limited or cancelled to promote social distancing
- We will follow guidelines on the number of persons allowed in the building.
What about the Summer Reading Program?
It’s still happening! Reading logs are being distributed during curbside service. Check our calendar for scheduled activities.
